Eight years after the first English edition by Basic Books, A.R. Luria’s The Mind of the Mnemonist was reissued by Chicago-based publisher Henry Regnery. Roger Harvey’s jacket design uses Harry Obese, the heaviest weight of Harry, alongside Univers. The layered text snippets in pink and red additionally feature Helvetica, Times New Roman, and Bookman – but those are likely repurposed from existing material.

Album and promo art for Sean Wolcott’s 12th album, Crystal Eyes Stalk at Midnight. Macbeth is used as the primary display typeface, along with Harry supporting. Futura can be seen in the Clockwork Records logo, and Eurostile was used for the BGM logo along with the catalogue number.

For the promo posters, a variety of fonts were used including Nuevo Passion (a 2013 digitization of Mecanorma’s Contest), Cooper Black, and ITC Serif Gothic. Akzidenz-Grotesk Condensed is used for body copy throughout the cover and promo posters.

The late 1970s movie theater feel is evoked by setting the main titles in Cooper Black paired with Harry for smaller text. The film review quotes appear to be set in Cooper BT Bold.

Let’s Do It Again is a 1975 American action crime comedy film, starring Sidney Poitier and co-starring Bill Cosby and Jimmie Walker among an all-star black cast. The film, directed by Poitier, is about blue-collar workers who decide to rig a boxing match to raise money for their fraternal lodge.

The movie posters use Steven Bernstein’s Sanditype, alongside Harry and Helvetica Condensed for the tagline. Credits are set in what looks like a phototype version of Lightline Gothic (or a light weight of Photo-Lettering’s News Gothic Condensed), and “A First Artists Production” is added in Mistral. The illustration is by Sandy Kossin and Jack Rickard, respectively. No typographer is credited.

Ulick O’Connor’s biography of Irish poet, short story writer, novelist, playwright, and Irish Republican Brendan Behan (1923–1964) was printed by Hazell’s and published by Coronet (Hodder’s paperback imprint) in 1972. Dan Farson’s photo is not credited to him but to Radio Times Hulton Picture Library, the copyright holders.

The title uses a chromatic setting of Caslon Rounded (a.k.a. Old Bowery), and the author’s name is either in Harry or Letraset’s close follower, Horatio. Back cover set in Helvetica Light Condensed 967 and Univers 685 and 689.

Personal Money Management is a textbook created by Bailard, Biehl & Kaiser Inc., an investment firm in Menlo Park, California. The book was published in many editions, from 1969 to 1992. This 1973 edition was designed by Naomi Takigawa who credited the typefaces Century Schoolbook and Blippo Modern in the colophon. The latter appears to be Facsimile Fonts’ copy of a design that may have originated at VGC as Bubble. Blippo Light [a copy of Harry Thin, see comments] is used for the author names on the cover.

The charming drawings throughout the book are by Ralph Mapson. This one includes lettering inspired by Futura Black.

Poster for Orson Welles’ 1973 docudrama, F for Fake, designed by Donn Trethewey in 1977. Donn’s first name is sometimes listed online as Dom, or Don, due to the fact that the style of font used as his signature/logo on posters he designed has the fully arched n, and at low resolution it can read like an m. The true first name is hard to confirm, but most likely is Donn.

Wikipedia describes the film as:

Initially released in 1974, it focuses on Elmyr de Hory's recounting of his career as a professional art forger; de Hory's story serves as the backdrop for a meandering investigation of the natures of authorship and authenticity, as well as the basis of the value of art. Far from serving as a traditional documentary on de Hory, the film also incorporates Welles's companion Oja Kodar, hoax biographer Clifford Irving and Orson Welles as himself. F for Fake is sometimes considered an example of a film essay.

The title is set in tightly kerned and optically compressed ITC American Typewriter. The rest of the type is set using the Thin style of Harry. A nice example of well-executed pairing of contrasting typefaces.

The Sony Walkman logo is based on Burko Circle.

On July 1st, 1979, Sony changed the world with the release of their breakthrough portable music cassette player. Before this product, though people were able to listen to music on-the-go with boomboxes and portable radios, the Sony Walkman allowed you to privately listen to the music of your choice, on-the-go, with a truly portable device.

An earlier logo was used beginning in 1979 and continuing until 1981. Then from 1981 until 2000, Sony used this logo, based on Burko Circle, for its logo on Walkman cassette players and CD players. The designer made some alterations to the L and K. In some later Walkman models, they seem to have made additional edits to the logo, which include squishing of the W, and lowering the position of the circle within the A.

Burko Circle (top, from Dan X. Solo’s Sans Serif Display Alphabets, 1979) compared to the Walkman logo (bottom, 1981): A and N were made slightly wider, the dot in A was enlarged and moved up, L got a round outer corner, and K was given a curved leg for more stability.

In some later versions of the logo, as seen on the WM-FX421 in this photo, they have moved the circle downward, within the letter A, and they squished the letter W somewhat.

Brief Replies is the second album by Ten Wheel Drive, a rock band led by Genya Ravan. It was released in 1970 on Polydor Records. While the name of the group uses all-caps Harry in two contrasting weights, the album title is handwritten. The lyrics on the gatefold are set in Century Expanded, with initials from Futura Bold. The same combination also appears on the back cover.

Two freshly graduated female students hold their diplomas up in the air while looking at the viewer, with one exposing a naked leg. For those who consider the combination of the image with the subtitle “A Report Card on the Love Generation” too vague, a row of clip-art-like images has been added below the film title, detailing what the viewer will be seeing: some romance and no shortage of fast and motorized machines.

On the IMDb website, the film is summarized as “one for forgiving fans of 70’s counter-culture flicks” by user Red Barracuda:

For me, some films get by almost exclusively on their early 70’s era vibes. The Young Graduates is such a movie. [...] It’s not particularly strong in the story department but for what it’s worth it revolves around a teenage girl who starts an affair with one of her teachers; later on, her and her friend set off on a road trip where they encounter various stock and trade characters of the day.

The typefaces are trendy choices. Harry (1966) was released a few years before by VGC for setting headlines on their Photo Typositor machines. Bradley was published as a typeface by ATF in 1895. In the 1960s and 1970s it lived a second life along numerous other “novelty” typefaces of the late 1800s, after they were made available for phototype and/or rub-down lettering.

The Eye of the Queen is the debut novel by science fiction writer Phillip Mann (1942–2022). First published by Gollancz in the UK in 1982, this is the book jacket for the first American edition, by Arbor House in 1983.

Once more, Loretta Trezzo demonstrates her skills both in illustration and typography. The enigmatic image depicts a hand in the sky, floating above or emerging from a volcano, with an eyeless human head lying in the foreground. The title is presented in Countdown, with condensed proportions, custom small caps, and a hyper-extended Q tail. A spur was added to N, for better legibility. Mann’s name is set in caps from Harry.

Apollo 100 was a short-lived British instrumental group that had a U.S. Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hit with the Johann Sebastian Bach-inspired single “Joy” in 1972.

This is the cover of the album of the same name, released on Mega Records in March 1972. The squarish caps with shadow are from Fat Albert, drawn by Ray Cruz for Schaedler. The group’s name, “featuring Tom Parker” and “includes the hit version of Bach’s great instrumental” are set in a couple of weights from VGC’s Harry. The cover of this EP by Mr. Pickwick contains a rare gem: it’s Gadget Lined, designed by Peter Bennett and released by Zipatone. Song names are set in Harry.

Fashion Kush is a company that produces gadgets and appareal for smokers and weed lovers. All gadgets from their Successful Stoner product line sport a logo pairing the calligraphic Nautica with outlined Harry Obese, creating a sporty/tennis vibe.

Benhur (ベンハー) is a Japanese “Pachislo” slot machine made by Daito Onkyo in 1988. The logo is based on Harry Obese. “Bonus Games” is Yankee Shadow, customized with perspective shadows and three-colored stripes. “Medals” looks like Futura Condensed Bold, and the accompanying numerals are from Cooper Black. “777” is probably custom drawn. There’s also some Helvetica and Eurostile. The Japanese fonts are unidentified [edit: according to commentator A, it’s Gona].

ITC Souvenir has made a big comeback in recent years. This packaging gives a bit of depth to the recent trend of soft serifs paired with neo-grotesques.

The Probe logo is based on caps from Harry Obese.

Orihiro, launched in 1972, “has been involved in packaging machinery business for decades, mainly for foods but also for other products, and in health food business that supports the healthy living of all people.”

The company logo is set in the capitals of Harry Fat. On the company history page, the oldest image showing the logo is from 1984, on the packaging of “Night Diet Super” tablets.

Sony Watchman FD-40A

Less well known than its famous audio counterpart, the Walkman, Sony’s Watchman is a line of portable pocket TVs. First introduced in 1982, it was discontinued in 2000. Throughout the more than 65 different models, the logo uses Russell Square, in all lowercase letters.
