Andrew S. Berish’s Hating Jazz listens to the voices who have denounced, disparaged, and mocked the music. By focusing on the rejection of the music, Berish says, we see more holistically jazz’s complicated place in American cultural life.

Brian Chartier designed the punchy and distinctive orange and black cover for the book. Set in Manicotti with slightly-rounded corners, the word “JAZZ” is split onto two lines that occupy nearly the entire book. I love to see it!

Photos of jazz instruments are subtly overlaid atop the bold letterforms, and the word “HATING” is scrawled over the whole thing in handwritten white marker.

The author and subtitle are typeset in Zavier Leslie Cabarga’s BadTyp, set at various point sizes to reinforce its chaotic randomness.

For its debut issue, the student-run magazine El caldo at Centro de diseño, cine y televisión pursued a tongue-praising theme. Inspired by Mexican Spanish ambiguities and all types of idioms deriving directly from the “lengua” (“tongue)” concept, El caldo’s debut edition brings together multiple contributions ranging from poems and short stories to photo essays and interviews.

Written contributions reunite essays by Berke Gold, Daniel Berkstein Guillemot, Sebastián M. Finck, Natalia Padilla, Karla Muñoz, and Radamés Vargas.

The typographic approach also found its way through these ambiguites, choosing plurality over monotony as a manner of illustrating the diversity upon which the community builds itself. Hence the cover title is set in an array of Black Mamba, Manicotti, Roslindale and Krsna; subtitles in BRRR and Druk; and body text in Lausanne.

The artwork for the double album Enkel Duetten / Wachtmuziek (2020) was designed by Oliver Ibsen, a collaboration of Lieven Van Speybroeck and Boris Van den Eynden. The latter is also a member of Borokov Borokov.

While the band name is set in caps from Manicotti (DJR), “2 studioalbum van” is in Ingeborg Block (Typejockeys). The track list and credits as well as the sticker use various styles of Bureau Grot (Font Bureau). Two tyefaces are still unidentified: the condensed caps used for “Enkel Duetten” (with the letters “en” represented by ampersands – en is the Dutch word for “and”), and the bold monospaced sans set on a circle, resembling a clockface.

The world of toy guns is an imaginative world of brightly colored water pistols and oddly shaped laser weapons. Yet it is also a world of eerily realistic guns that can easily be mistaken for the real deal. These toys are so well designed that they could scare you to death, or, at least, look like nothing to play with.

Peacekeepers is a selection of one hundred EU-approved toy guns. The photo series is part of Daan Wubben’s research into toy gun design and regulations in the European Union. All pieces were ordered online, shot in the studio and returned to sender.

Sorry You Couldn’t Make It is the 23rd(!) full-length album from legendary soul musician Swamp Dogg, released today by Joyful Noise Recordings and Pioneer Works Press.

Different editions of the album feature variations on packaging, and some come with extra tracks on a separate disk, but they all make prominent use of typefaces with horizontal stress, namely Manicotti and Clifton. A booklet accompanying the limited edition from Pioneer Works and some smaller text on the labels also features Buffon.

Yella Fella is a fictional cowboy and mascot for YellaWood brand pressure treated lumber. He fights bad guys, does other cowboy stuff, and still finds time to be the “hero of outdoor building.” This great promotional website is complete with four seasons worth of webisodes, games, and more, featuring a mishmash of wood type-inspired typefaces, led by Manicotti and Mesquite, as well as some hand lettering.

Burbank [rather Back Beat, see comments], Manicotti, and Candy Script are a pitch perfect trio to accompany Invisible Creature’s cutesweet illustration.

17″×22¾″ broadsheet featuring 10 essays about contemporary wood type production and printing. Printed in a limited edition of 1,000 to accompany the Wood Type Evolved exhibition at Columbia College Chicago.
