Through 15 outfits curated from significant Japanese designers, the exhibition aims to unveil the influential nature of Japanese design. It showcases how Japanese fashion assimilates global trends and transforms them into new ones with a unique sensitivity.

Designer Tereza Bettinardi chose Alias AnoStencil for title and headline graphics, supported by Ano, both available from Alias. Styrene from Commercial Type is used for text.

Alias Ano in use for a series of German-language books by Belgian writer Georges Simenon, most famous for his fictional detective Jules Maigret. Simenon was a prolific author, with the series currently numbering over 80 books.

In 2019, Atlantik Verlag published a series of German language editions, translated by Eugen Helmlé and with covers designed by Rothfos & Gabler.

Gothenburg’s Way Out West Festival for 2024 continues its use of Ano, and expands its use of large signposting type.

For Gothenburg’s Way Out West Festival for 2023, Ano is paired with Maxi Round — typefaces that express geometry in different ways. Maxi Round is mainly used with Ano for advertising and for social media, with Ano used in various ways on-site.

In a former spinning mill surrounded by the Vorarlberg Alps, traditional Raku ceramic tiles are made by KARAK. Raku is a firing technique developed in Japan in the 16th century. The ceramics are pre-fired at 700°C and are made to glow in a highly heated kiln at 1000°C. They are then embedded in a container with leaves, straw or sawdust to form an airtight seal. The resulting smoke, as well as the minerals contained in the organic materials, create patterns on the clay and glaze, making each tile inimitably unique.

Each KARAK tile blank is individually shaped by hand and bears the unmistakable hand-stamped logo on the back. “As a sign of its originality and our conviction that this actually completely crazy manufacturing process is the only true one for us.” emphasizes the tile maker, whose concept was developed in 2007 by the ceramic artist Marta Rauch-Debevec and clay builder Martin Rauch. In 2015, Sebastian Rauch and his childhood friend Thomas Rösler took over the art project and turned it into a company.

Chaos and order, function and beauty: KARAK tiles draw together opposites into a grounded whole. In order to translate this dialectical company philosophy into a visual identity, a self-confident font was needed. KARAK decided on the display family Nikolai, designed by Franziska Weitgruber, who works as a designer in the South Tyrolean Alps.

Nikolai’s baptism of fire was the relaunch of KARAK’s website in May 2022 (design and development: Huangart, Vienna), which Franziska Weitgruber also advised on. For navigation and small print, Ano designed by Gareth Hague and published by Alias comes into play.

Since then, the Karak website has gone on to win two awards. At the Creativ Club Austria, Huangart who oversaw the project received a Silver award. At awwwards, the website was chosen by a 19-member jury as Site Of The Day on 9 April 2022.

Architecture office Bajet Giramé commissioned us to create a new visual identity and website that would convey their core values and help the studio members make short work of the typically troublesome communication and documentation tasks.

(...) Among the key tenets of the proposal was the creation of a classification system that used the monogram ‘bg’ to codify the studio’s projects. This didn’t only help identify and archive individual projects, but generated an important and visually fertile ingredient for the development of the identity and its collateral. In terms of style, the proposal sought to strike a balance midway between European rationality and Mediterranean warmth, which resulted in a language that’s brimming with nuance and contrast.

Gothenburg’s Way Out West returns in 2022 after being unable to go ahead in 2020 and 2021. As before, it is a three-day music festival “for all music-loving, culturally oriented young minds.”

As for the 2019 festival, Alias Ano is used throughout, both for on-site graphics and line-up announcements and advertising.

Mestís is a restaurant in Palma, Spain. The restaurant aims to serve Mediterranean food in a modern and surprising way.

Anostencil is used for the logotype and headlines, supported by Ano for secondary text.

When looking at its regular weight only, one could get the impression that Alias Ano is just another straightforward geometric sans serif. In fact, it’s a multifaceted kit, or, as designer Gareth Hague put it, “a simple geometric, monoline framework”, which he originally drew for Another Man magazine. The type system spans six weights, four of which (Eighth, Quarter, Half, Regular) are mathematically defined to allow combinations with consistent line widths. Each weight includes three variations, always in upright, Italic, and Back Italic postures, for a total of 54 fonts.

In addition to the conventional Regular, the three variations include Upper Lower, in which the capitals have scaled-up minuscule forms, and Wide. Here, all caps are as wide as they are tall, whereas the lowercase offers caps that occupy exactly half the width. Ano Wide doubles down on the limitations of monospaced typeface designs: not only is there one fixed width for the caps and a second fixed width for the lowercase. The two are also unusually wide (full square) and narrow (half square), respectively. This concept leads to a unique neo-Art Deco look. Together with the monolinear strokes that pass on any perceivable optical correction, it yields a peculiar pattern with both open and dense glyphs, especially in the Black weight,

For Thomas Kunst’s novel Zandschower Klinken, the jacket designers worked with Ano Black Wide. Apparently, they weren’t quite happy with all the letterforms that result from Ano’s strict system: several of the glyphs were altered to make them less congested. This includes enlarging the counters and apertures (see D, H, O, R), redrawing the W, and, more strikingly, expanding the two K’s in “Klinken”. In fact, these are the uppercase full square form (as seen in “Kunst”), squooshed to around 75%. Unfortunately, this modification shows in the uneven line widths between the stems and the arms.
