Show Love is an annual event held during NBA All-Star Weekend, where Hoopbus brings the joy of basketball to grassroots communities. The tour features engaging activities, including tournaments, court refurbishments, and community outreach efforts. This year, Hoopbus traveled to the Bay Area to Show Bay Love.

Ben Loiz Studio worked with Hoop Bus to develop a visual identity for the tour as well as design development for social media awareness, printed materials, brand partnerships, and environmental graphics.

The visual identity draws inspiration from the Bay, incorporating typography reminiscent of San Francisco’s iconic cable cars, the lettering on vintage Warriors jerseys, and the tranquil waters of the surrounding inland sea.

The designs burst with the energy of basketball, showcasing a dynamic array of logos, vibrant colors, and expressive type treatments that capture the sport’s excitement. Together, these elements create a cohesive identity that resonates with the spirit of basketball, celebrating both the heritage of the Bay Area and the passion of the fans.

16 feet of neon welcomes visitors to downtown Raleigh, N. Carolina and this reimagined mid-century motor lodge. The “Longleaf” type formally references the soaring asymmetric branches of longleaf pines which are defining of the area. Rather than simply declaring The Longleaf Hotel & Lounge, "Long Live Longleaf" represents a greater commitment to longleaf pines which are endangered and receding.

Mora Prince of Atelier C’est signé designed a fresh and lighthearted identity for L’Avant Seine. Since the 2019/2020 season, the theater in Colombes (a commune in the suburbs of Paris) has a new look that is centered around Loupot. The cheeky angular script is contrasted with the spotless curves of LL Circular. Loupot’s spikey diagonals are echoed in the starburst that frames the logo and also appears elsewhere in the identity. With an intervention that is as simple as it is clever, Prince turns the letter i into an exclamation mark. The repositioned dot allows for a tighter linespacing and accentuates the symmetry of the wordmark.

Patois sign, 2008

The hanging sign for the Patois was handpainted by New York designer and illustrator Laurie Rosenwald, loosely based on the Loupot typeface that she was working on at that time, and which she completed together with Boston type designer Cyrus Highsmith in 1998. The angular script letterforms are inspired by the St. Raphaël logotype drawn by French designer Charles Loupot in 1938. The final Loupot typeface is a tad lighter and got a conventionally angled t top. It’s available from Occupant Fonts.

Patois was a “groundbreaking French bistro that launched the culinary Renaissance of Smith Street”. It opened on 255 Smith St., Boerum Hill, Brooklyn in 1997.

It’s hard to tell from the look of it today, but when [Alan] Harding and sibling partners Jim and Paul Mamary opened Patois in 1997, Smith Street was so depressed that many retail storefronts were used as apartments. The trio’s original rent on the space, between Douglass and Degraw streets, was just $900. — Brooklyn Paper

The restaurant closed at the end of 2008. Google Street View’s earliest capture is from June 2009: the hanging sign was already gone then. By 2011, La Casita Yarn Shop Café had opened at this address. There was a new Patois on 177 Mulberry Street in Little Italy, Manhattan, which lasted until c. 2013. That place is now known as Grotta Azzurra.

Feuermelder (“fire alarm”) is a pub on Krossener Straße in Berlin’s Friedrichshain district that has been around at least since 2004. If you can handle the hardcore music and the red interior walls decorated with palm trees, skulls and bones, it’s a great place to spend the night, having drinks and playing foosball or pool. The font used for the illuminated sign above the door as well as for the logo on the menu is Loupot.
