MEADOWS Kitchens is an award-winning kitchen design studio located in the UK. First established in 2006, the family-run business has completed a broad array of projects across the country, delivering refined, considered and sustainable kitchens to the highest level. Their design practice focuses on working with a mixture of contrasting materials, textures, finishes and soft hues to deliver contemporary yet timeless design outcomes.

MEADOWS Studios is their new design studio, showroom and concept store located in Newyln, Cornwall. It is the product of Josh, director and designer at MEADOWS Kitchens, and his wife Kitty, offering a curated selection of homewares, books, art, clothing and accessories. The concept of the showroom is for everything to be shoppable, encouraging customers to shop ethically and sustainably—a reflection of MEADOWS Kitchens’ philosophy and dedication to craftmanship. From the art on the walls, to the shelving, lighting, cabinetry, home accessories, textiles, clothing and more, the store showcases makers and artists from the Cornish shores to Danish, Australian and London designers. The showroom upstairs, with its fully functioning kitchen, is also used to host events, including dinners, workshops and talks from local artisans and artists.

Studio Thomas Hatton was engaged to create a brand identity that houses both MEADOWS Kitchens and their new showroom, MEADOWS Studios. The brand identity draws inspiration from MEADOWS Kitchens methodology—utilising mixed materials, textures and finishes—and the diversity of objects (homewares, books, art, clothing) now showcased in their concept store. This is evident in the forms of signage, printed material and digital interpretations. From stainless steel laser cut signage to chalk writing on glass, letterpress on specialist metallic and textured papers, lightbox signage and more. The aim was to keep the design and typographic language restrained and minimal yet highly considered in its craft, to allow the mixture of materials and finishes to take centre stage. The result is a sleek, contemporary visual identity and design system, with diverse applications, which seamlessly translate across every touchpoint of the brand’s communications.

Hotel Désertica is located in the center of San Pedro de Atacama. We embarked on this fascinating project when the hotel was still under construction. They called us with the intention of taking over all the graphics that accompany the hotel. In this way we decided to enhance the brand through the concept “hotel of origin”. We developed items ranging from the keychain, the signs, a welcome kit, the website, postcards, an illustrated map, laundry bags, stationery, and countless other things. We managed to generate our own hotel identity spanning a wide graphic range, with diversity in the individual items and an interesting and unique graphic interplay. We care about the materiality, the colors, the layout, and the typefaces in each item.

PampaType’s Reforma 1918 type family is a central element of the identity. It’s used for the welcome cards, the door hangers, and the seal-like logo where it’s set in all caps on a circle. Reforma 1918 is paired with Commercial Type’s Canela which serves for the big rotated lines. The full logo with the “hotel de origin” claim uses caps from another serif and a sans serif, both of which are unidentified [see comments]. The informal script used for the location is Northwell by Set Sail Studios. The website (not shown here) is rendered in Playfair Display, Montserrat, and Roboto Condensed.

Loose Units is “a high octane race through the grey areas of life as a cop” by Australian journalist/writer Paul F. Verhoeven (not to be confused with Dutch film director / writer Paul Verhoeven).

Part father-son story, part true crime, Loose Units is a race through the underbelly of policing as ex-cop John Verhoeven tells all to his son Paul about the crimes, the characters and the pitch-black humour.

The cover design for this pocket book seems to promise action, action and action. The title is made with two big blocks of Aachen, set in a way that suggests do-not-cross police lines. The authors’ names and the blurb look like they were scribbled at high speed. Laszczuk chose not to do the lettering of the cover himself, or to ask a lettering artist – or the father and son of this book (I am curious what that would've looked like!). Instead, he resorted to two readily available typefaces by U.K. based graphic designer Sam Parrett: Northwell (a typeface that emulates eroded handwriting) and Have Heart, which comes in two weights. One that resembles regular handwriting, and one all caps weight, which is used here.
