For the September 2022 issue of Fast Company, Creative Director Mike Schnaidt and Design Director Alice Alves assembled a refined editorial palette to present the magazine’s annual “Most Creative People in Business” list, honoring innovators across technology, healthcare, entertainment, and design.

The cover prominently features Cosi Azure Bold and Black by Nikolas Type, whose sculptural elegance and crisp modulation bring a sense of clarity and authority to the key headlines. Article sublines are in Cosi Times. The magazine’s text typeface is a customized Meret from TypeMates, and the logo is based on R-Typography’s Grifo, see this post.

The typographic system of the special issue is complemented by PP Monument Extended Black (Pangram Pangram), A2 Beckett Light and Regular (A2-TYPE), and Centra No. 2 Bold (Sharp Type / Monotype), creating a balanced dialogue between expressive display forms and precise editorial text.

The italic is from Colophon’s Grenette.

Beastly (OH no Type Co.) is used for the initial. The text typeface is unidentified.

The initial Y is from Salvaje Display (Typozon).

Medjool dates are a variety of palm fruit that, unlike most other dates, are large, soft, and chewy with a caramel-like taste. They’re also sweeter than their smaller counterparts. This variety of dates, originating in Morocco but now grown globally, is a natural snack that is tasty on its own, but folks can also combine them with nut butter for a delicious, healthier candy.

The other fonts are Akzidenz-Grotesk Bold and Arial Black, used in all caps. “Date Better” probably is custom drawn. Some boxes additionally feature Cooper Black Italic (“Superfood”) and Typo Slab Serif (“Ground Up”).

Launched in 2021, Bobine is an independent media enterprise that celebrates French terroirs and their know-how through a print magazine, a podcast, immersive articles, and a newsletter. Behind Bobine, there is Justine, committed photographer, founder of Studio Payol, and trained artistic director, who likes to celebrate the beauty and poetry of the moment through images. And also François, editor and producer of podcasts, who travels across France with his bike and his microphone to meet the reels of the French regions.

They describe their magazine as follows: “We love timeless stories. Those that stick in your mind years later. When they have grain, relief and a beautiful audio and visual signature. Sharing stories, highlighting know-how or even telling the invisible, Studio Bobine takes the side of Beauty.” Three issues were published so far, no. 1, “Héritage”; no. 2, “Résistance”; and no. 3, “Périphérie”.

This magazine is using many different typefaces, to illustrate the variety and creativity of the content. The all-lowercase logo features Paul Eslage’s Sombra Poster. To typeset the body text, they choose Mercury, a robust serif typeface, designed especially for newspaper articles and available at Hoefler&Co.

For the titles, subtitles, quotes, names and captions Bobine is using Tarnac Sans, a typeface drawn by Marc Rouault and distributed by Sharp Type. The Tarnac family is directly inspired by the hand-painted Michelin road signs made in the sixties. Marc designed the Égyptienne (slab-serif) version first and the Sans version in a second time. Tarnac Sans keeps the same wonky proportions and flat-interior bowl shapes as Tarnac – which are a French aesthetic signature. This use, in a French magazine promoting heritage, is a perfect match for Tarnac!

The names of the flowers and herbs are rendered in Frode Helland’s Erika Hand.

“Inspired by the ocean, crafted by the earth” are the values of Olatu. This artisanal fruit juice brand is the culmination of an idea by young Basque entrepreneurs deeply connected to their region. Olatu offers a selection of around fifteen organic fruit and vegetable juices distributed in the southwest of France.

Drawing inspiration from nature and made by hand, the curves of the typography surge like the waves of the Basque Country. They bring a more contemporary perspective to the renowned Basque typography. This design is a breath of fresh air in this traditional visual landscape where green, red, and the Basque cross are omnipresent.

Each flavor takes you on a vibrant gustatory and visual journey of the surroundings. Embark on a discovery of Guethary fronton while savoring an apple ginger juice, or explore the Bayonne market while leaving with a tomato juice infused with Espelette pepper!

Brand identity and website for TriFlorals, a wedding and event florist in Raleigh, NC. The identity, designed by Big Fog, features Cristian Vargas' gorgeous Salvaje Display in the logo, which is paired with Windsor for headlines, Syne Bold for subheadlines, and Pretend Foundry’s Pinopolis for body copy. TriFlorals approached us wanting to create a brand that was different than your typical florist. They wanted to stick out from the traditional wedding crowd with a welcoming energy. One of their main goals is to “demystify flowers” and encourage people to “get hands on stems”—to make the joy of working with flowers less intimidating and more accessible.

As it says on their website, Science™ really does say that looking at flowers makes you feel better, so we wanted the TriFlorals brand to feel like stumbling on a field of bright blooms, like the first day of Spring all the time. We created their logo and brand identity (including brand fonts, brand colors, and brand illustrations), and then designed and built their WordPress website. The site features a growing collection of illustrations and animations.

Creative studio Decade from New York City worked with luggage brand Paravel to create their first campaign. The posters use a range of display typefaces, all paired with Paravel’s brand typeface Post Grotesk.

From first to last image, these are Canopée used for “Montauk”; Salvaje Display is used for “Flushing”; “Chinatown” is set in Zangezi Sans; an unidentified fraktur is used for “Sheep’s Meadow”; House Script for “Everywhere’s a trip!” and “Luggage for explorers”; University Roman (or Mecanorma’s version named Celtic) is used for “The Catskills”.

The campaign was New York City-focused, with subway ads and a station takeover of Broadway/Lafayette, as well as placements in MetroNorth and Grand Central, and was brought to life in various print and digital formats. From the Decade website:

Travel is more than a few trips a year to faraway places—looking at the world through the eyes of a traveler means finding adventure everywhere, everyday. To tell this story, the campaign featured local spots made to feel like exotic destinations. With cinematic images, graphic treatments inspired by vintage travel postcards, and tongue-in-cheek reminders that “everywhere’s a trip,” we communicated the sense of humor and imagination at the heart of Paravel’s approach to travel.

Founded back in 2002, Sneaker Freaker is the first and only international footwear magazine. From its roots as a DIY-style fanzine to today’s global coverage, its pages have documented every colab, custom, limited edition, retro reissue, Quickstrike, Hyperstrike and Tier Zero sneaker released over the last decade and a half.

For issue 43, headlines are set in Druk Wide and Salvaje Display. The serif typeface used for lead paragraphs seems to be Goudy 38.

Spotted in Halle (Saale), Germany: An unexpected and dynamic poster using the Regular and the Italic version of Salvaje Display.

This poster was designed by Mohd Fairuz Bin Sulaiman, who is Teaching Assistant at KISD. It’s part of an exhibition happening at the main design event Hurra Hurra – International Festival of Design Education for the 21st Century, taking place at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design from 4–6 October 2019.

Salvaje Display was used for the book title, chosen for its dynamic, bulbous letterforms. The delicacy of Self Modern and strong character of Marguerite play off each other on the inside pages. Designed, illustrated and published by experimental publishing imprint and graphic design studio Dossier Industries.

The work of the sculptor Constantin Brancusi is that of a solitary creator. Like cubists, Brancusi was looking for a new plastic reality. However, the reference to a natural and cosmic world, which underlies all of his work, distances him from his more intellectual concerns.

This – fictional – book traces the main lines of the life of one of the major sculptors of the twentieth century.

Memories Fade. Let go of the negative and hold onto the positive.

Part of a project that deals with the topic of depression. The message conveyed in this specific piece explores my recent revelation of having to let go of the negative / toxic thoughts and memories, in order move forward. The floppy disk resembles events that go back as far as I remember (the first form of a memory holding device I can remember). For the time being, it’s flat artwork, but there are plans to create a physical object from it.
