They Might Be Giants, sometimes called The Pink Album, is the debut studio album from Brooklyn-based band They Might Be Giants. It was released by Bar/None in 1986. The album generated two singles, “Don't Let's Start” and “(She Was A) Hotel Detective”. […]

The album’s cover art was illustrated by Rodney Alan Greenblat, who had no prior association with the band. It extends to the back cover of the album, and shows John Linnell and John Flansburgh riding a large blue dog. John Linnell commented that the illustration caused the record to be mistaken for a children's album. The art was pasted up by John Flansburgh.

a 1986 American rock musical comedy horror film directed by Frank Oz. It is a film adaptation of the off-Broadway musical comedy of the same name by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman about a geeky florist shop worker who finds out his Venus flytrap can speak. Menken and Ashman's Off-Broadway musical was based on the low-budget 1960 film The Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Roger Corman. The 1986 film stars Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Vincent Gardenia, Steve Martin, and Levi Stubbs as the voice of Audrey II. The film also featured special appearances by Jim Belushi, John Candy, Christopher Guest and Bill Murray. It was produced by David Geffen through The Geffen Company and released by Warner Bros. on December 19, 1986.

It’s not the group of the same name that performed as the backing band of Roy Orbison, though. The Candy Bar And The Spearmint Twist was released in 1959 by Peter Pan Records.

“Candy Bar” is set in Portly, an extended variant of Metro. It was added to the Filmotype library in 1955. “Spearmint” is another Filmotype face used in all caps: It’s Zingo – with added stripes. “Hi-fi for small fry” pairs Flash (1939) and Futura Bold (1928). “Twist” and “and the” are in two rather generic grotesques, and can be a lot of things. The glyphs at hand are probably not enough to pinpoint the typefaces.

This post was originally published at Fonts In Use
