For the September 2022 issue of Fast Company, Creative Director Mike Schnaidt and Design Director Alice Alves assembled a refined editorial palette to present the magazine’s annual “Most Creative People in Business” list, honoring innovators across technology, healthcare, entertainment, and design.

The cover prominently features Cosi Azure Bold and Black by Nikolas Type, whose sculptural elegance and crisp modulation bring a sense of clarity and authority to the key headlines. Article sublines are in Cosi Times. The magazine’s text typeface is a customized Meret from TypeMates, and the logo is based on R-Typography’s Grifo, see this post.

The typographic system of the special issue is complemented by PP Monument Extended Black (Pangram Pangram), A2 Beckett Light and Regular (A2-TYPE), and Centra No. 2 Bold (Sharp Type / Monotype), creating a balanced dialogue between expressive display forms and precise editorial text.

The italic is from Colophon’s Grenette.

Beastly (OH no Type Co.) is used for the initial. The text typeface is unidentified.

The initial Y is from Salvaje Display (Typozon).

Ronan Space Systems is a Canadian space startup focused on designing, developing, and building launch-ready technology for the challenges of tomorrow’s space industry. Founded by Andrew Ronan and Sarah Thompson, the company is driven by a bold ambition: to shape the future of humanity beyond Earth.

The visual identity was developed by Zak:

We positioned Ronan as a pioneer with perspective; a daring voice in a new era of cosmic exploration. Inspired by ancient petroglyphs, the team was passionate about doing something different – about leaving behind a mark that reflects our ever-evolving humanity.

The brand we created speaks with a strange but optimistic voice. Its visual language is organic and adaptable, evoking both the past and the far future. The result is a brand that feels undeniably Ronan.

The brand typography uses the Extended widths of PP Monument by Pangram Pangram, which has recently grown to count five widths, each in nine weights plus italics. The complementary monospaced sans serif is Basis Grotesque Mono [see comments].

With the title of the exhibition, Living in a Pastime Paradise, artist Michael von Brentano refers to a song by Stevie Wonder from 1976, in which the singer laments that most people focus only on the pleasant aspects of the past and elevate them to a paradigm for the future.

I incorporated this theme into the design by combining two different fonts by Pangram Pangram: PP Monument, representing the present/future with its clean and structured form, and Playground, reflecting the embellished past with its playful and ornate style. This contrast is further echoed in the background, which shows the reflection of an upside-down forest in a frozen lake, blurring the lines between reality and illusion, past and present.

On November 16th, Alicia Ostriker will be reading luminous poems from her 20th collection, The Holy & Broken Bliss, as part of the Stanton Reading Series. The poster for the reading event in New York features an early use of Bitzer. James Plattner’s display roman was released just last month through Future Fonts. The secondary fonts ate Aperçu Mono and PP Monument.

Desire Lines is a collateral pavilion of the Venice Art Biennale 2024. The project brings together three independent European cultural institutions: Proforma (UK), Begehungen (DE), and PASE (IT). Their goal is to build connections between artists from the European scene through residencies, exhibitions, performances, and other events. This edition features the work of artists such as Edgar Leciejewski, Margret Hoppe, Max Magaldi, Pierpaolo Ovarini, and Omari Taylor.

The visual identity is initially built around the concept of an apparent grid – both evolving and flexible – that serves as a foundational structure. It evokes the idea of a modifiable playground, a dynamic visual framework reflecting the diversity of creative approaches and perspectives of the invited artists. The logotype block unites the three entities, reinforcing the idea of connection and links, symbolized by a line that takes shape, illustrating the various possible paths. Each line becomes a guiding thread, a metaphor for the exchanges and connections woven between the different cultural actors and the spaces they occupy.

New book from Daraja Press. I felt that the fonts from Pangram Pangram married well with the bleak image to make a strong statement.

Urban Sports is a brand for customers who love to do sports or wear sporty clothes, do not neglect to be stylish in addition to comfort in the rush of the city and in all weather conditions, follow the trend, and prefer to use world brands that offer comfort and elegance together in daily life and sports activities, at the time of sale. It is an e-commerce company that brings together successful shopping with fast results, satisfaction-oriented strong customer service support, fast shipping capability and advantageous payment options.

The new logo was designed using PP Monument.

HUMAN is an electronic party that was born in Brescia, Italy, in 2018 at Vinile 45. The project is completely self-produced and organized by six artists, DJs and music lovers, who come together trying to make a significant contribution to the local nightlife.

These are some flyers made for events in winter 2022.

Founded in 2018 by Walter Di Costanzo, Filippo Baldo, Enrico Botta and Omar Mantiero, and joined by Maurizio Castrezzati and Federico Salogni, HUMAN is an electronic dance event that take places in Brescia, Italy.

The promotion of the summer dates was based using human body parts that were scratched and ruined in a brutalist style.

Saint-Forgeot is a village in the region of Burgundy in eastern France. It is this place that Myriam Ziouche and Benjamin de Blic have chosen to cultivate vegetables and aromatic plants under the name Ferme Poliveau. On their four-hectare plot of land, the duo uses organic, open-field methods to grow pumpkins, cucumbers, tomatoes and more. In a second step, they bottle and can their soups, pickles and confitures de légumes themselves, in the pursuit of meeting the environmental challenges of our time.

Designer Julien Lelièvre provided a visual identity that is equally straightforward and striking. He found the sweet spot between minimalism and intimacy that is appropriate for the small artisan farm. The name Ferme Poliveau as well as the description “maraîchers / conserveurs” is set in capitals from PP Monument by Pangram Pangram. The typeface chosen for accompanying text – on the website and on promotional printed matter – is Media Sans by Production Type. The website, developed by Francis Josserand, uses black-and-white typography to frame the photography which provides a glimpse into the alternative farm life.

For packaging the products of the organic market gardening farm, Lelièvre added a more promotional typeface to the mix: the labels on the bottles with soups made from squash, zucchini, and cauliflower are set in Joe182, a thick marker script by Jan Horčík.

In 2020, we have entered a new post-digital-transformation era; an era where needs and usages are being reinvented non-stop. It became necessary for Gfi, an agile IT services company, to anchor this new reality and at the same time turn a new page.

Gfi becomes Inetum: a new name, a new visual identity, and a new approach to our digital world.

Power Grotesk in use for Bay Dreams Music Festival, in a design by Trademark Live, who write:

Bay Dreams is an annual music festival held in Tauranga and Nelson, New Zealand. Bay Dreams was first introduced to New Zealand in 2016 the festival saw growth like no other and secured the world’s biggest names in music today. There is no denying Bay Dreams has been a major gamechanger on the New Zealand festival scene.

Black Mountains College, founded by writers Ben Rawlence and Owen Sheers, has been described as the world’s first climate change university. The college offers a single degree; (BA Hons) Sustainable Futures: Arts, Ecology, and Systems Change. Design studio Colour / Format was commissioned to design and produce a printed prospectus to accompany the course website.

The design scheme aims to deliver a non-trivial message in an accessible and engaging way, and to achieve dynamism through the interplay of type and image. The magazine informality is deliberate; to differentiate from incumbent institutions' prospectuses.

A series of digital single covers designed for a music project called Oltre le tue retine (“beyond your retinas”), the latest mixtape of indie/rap collective Anima Fvm from Lodi, near Milan. All the songs are available from the YouTube and SoundCloud profiles of Anima Fvm.

The concept for all covers is to represent how the collective’s music carries away the listener beyond imagination. Each cover is tailored to reflect the mood of the individual songs.

Bramz, the font used for all titles, perfectly represent the magic trip that the listeners will experience with this mixtape. FF Dot Matrix is used for “Anima Fvm – 2021” on the disk mockups. A lot of details are hidden in every cover, in the form of stickers or pieces of paper, featuring various other typefaces.

The tracklist (see the end of this post) features an original drawing of an eyeball from the 18th century. Wallet was chosen for the labels because its doodle-like style works great with the idea of an old medical paper.

Cuenca - Debajo de la segunda farola contains a collection of pictures and graphic experiments of my Erasmus studies from the second semester of 2019/2020. I needed to kind of compress my moments to be able to fully experience them and I also wanted to have a visible answer if someone asks me: “Hi, How was your Erasmus during the pandemic?”.

The title could be translated to English as “Cuenca – under the second latern”: My apartment was under the second streetlight of the street, so basically I designed the book under that light during the pandemic.

The main texts use Grafier, Formula Condensed and Neue Machina. On the other pages I was playing around with these and other fonts because I wanted to experience them in various combinations without any limitations. It was a kind of practice that helped me a lot to handle font combinations more consciously in my following projects.

In Vegan JapanEasy, Tim Anderson taps into Japan’s rich culture of cookery that’s already vegan or very nearly vegan, so there are no sad substitutes and zero shortcomings on taste.

Alias Harbour is used for headline text. See also Alias Harbour used for Tim Anderson’s earlier JapanEasy (2017). The wide capitals are from PP Monument (Pangram Pangram). Japanese texts are set in Hiragino Maru Gothic (from Jiyu-kobo and Screen Graphic Solutions Co.); The sans serifs used for smaller point sizes in the book interior are ABC Monument Grotesk and ABC Monument Grotesk Mono (Dinamo) as well as Knockout (not pictured).

For the latest single of German rapper Payy titled “Zweite Hälfte”, I slightly stretched the sharp seriffed Bordeaux Bold, which gives the cover a romantic feel. Bordeaux is used with an italicized initial Z. The song is about his second half, the love on his side, and what this love means to him.

PP Monument is used just like for all his other recent singles. Instead of for the title, it is used for the feature guest Payman. In the music video, both typefaces are used in the opening titles.

“Shaolin” is a single from Belgian producer Le Motel's latest album Pots & Pans, featuring rapper Magugu. The music video was directed by Nicolas Torres Correia and shot at the Shaolin Temple Europe, in Germany.

The title of the song is set in all-caps Nostra Sett, paired with Monument Extended for the credits. The type treatment was designed by Le Motel himself, who also happens to be taking care of everything visual for his own recently-created record label Maloca.

Square compositions for social media posts

After working with Payy for almost a year, I also designed the cover art for his latest single. “Schon Ok” became the strongest single for the Berlin-based rap artist in 2020. The photo was made by Iman Mo on the set of the music video shooting.

PP Monument is used just like for all his other recent singles, here with modifications. It’s a better fit for the essence of the lyrics, which describe heartbreaking love story. The video was produced by Cameron Carrasquilla.
