Liquid Sky is most likely the oldest active club and DJ collective in Umeå, a town deep in the north of Sweden primarily known for its 1990s SxE hardcore scene. Running an age well into its tweens, Liquid Sky is well-known in the area for the inclusive vibes and an always eclectic mix of DJs and genres; who says you can’t run Italo disco back-to-back with some DnB-laden footwork?

I made this poster series for our events in 2019, printed on cheap online offset and pasted all over town. We drove most of our visitors through word of mouth (and Facebook events), so the imperative for the posters was less about informing and more about making a statement (goofing).

The typographic palette is powered by early Future Fonts – Ohno’s Eckmannpsych, lo-ol’s Civilitate, and CSTM’s Xprmntl 03 – complemented by a backbone of DJR’s Nickel and Nickel Gothic, stretched in true 2019 techno fashion. The backgrounds were created through Illustrator’s Byzantine 3D generation capabilities, cranked to eleven and rotated until everything started to fall apart (including Illustrator itself).

Cult Classic magazine is a Portland-based collective commissioning and publishing creative works across the country. The magazine serves as a platform to preserve, promote and support independent and underground creatives.

The vibrant layouts and innovative use of type is the work of Portland, OR based FISK. Throughout the spreads you'll find Civilitate, Gooper, Lifted, and Nostra (all on Future Fonts), as well as GT America and GT America Mono from Grilli Type. Issue 03 is dedicated to the nocturnal:

The enigmatic period between dusk and dawn creates a moment of metamorphosis: swapping business casual for the fantastical, escaping the confines of a cubicle for the sanctuary of the discotheque, performing that nightly ritual to start the cycle all over again. This issue of Cult Classic illuminates those who come alive in the night; the hidden, the inexplicable and those who are tirelessly honing their craft while everyone else has called it a day.
