    <title>American Uncial in use</title>
    <link>https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/890/american-uncial</link>
<description>American Uncial in use. This entry is for the text design with upper- and lowercase letters. For the initials, see American Uncial Initials.

“American Uncial was designed and cut by hand by Victor Hammer in 1943 […] at Wells College in Aurora, New York […] Matrices were made and type was cast by the Dearborn Type foundry in Chicago, last of the small independent founders.” [McGrew 1993]

The design was first made available commercially by the Klingspor foundry in Germany in 1952, who had previously released a precursor with narrower proportions, see Hammer-Unziale (1923). “In total, it would publish three fonts under the name Neue Hammer-Unziale. The first, a 12 pt size, came onto market in 1952. Victor Hammer cut all of its punches in the United States. Klingspor published a 16 pt size four years later, also cut by Hammer. Printers could combine those sizes with a set of 28 pt initials, which Hammer cut himself as well. Those large initials were essentially ornaments and were not seen by Hammer as type to use for setting continuous texts.” [Reynolds] Shown in a mid-1950s specimen as Neue Hammer-Unciale and in a c. 1950s English-language Klingspor specimen as American Uncial. A Stempel specimen presents it as an “original Klingspor typeface” under the name Neue Hammer-Unciale. [Klingspor-Museum]

Phototype versions by Photo-Lettering [PLINC One Liner 1971], VGC (with initials and a bolder weight, see American Uncial Bold) [VGC 1973], Compugraphic as Uncial [Compugraphic 1976], and Lettergraphics as Rogers Uncial. [Lettergraphics 1976]

In 1988, Linotype produced a digitization named Neue Hammer Unziale, in two numbered versions, I and II. “Neue Hammer Unziale II is basically, although not 100 percent, the lowercase letters of American Uncial [Initials] combined with the uppercase letters of Neue Hammer Unziale I.” The OpenType version includes the glyphs of II as alternates. [Linotype] See also Uncial (Agfa/Monotype) and American Uncial Bold.</description>

The books cover the entire tree of life, with all organisms described in their taxonomic relation to each other and with (usually short) synopses. Lest you get too excited by the scope of this ambitious project (and it is in my opinion almost ludicrously ambitious) be forewarned that most taxa are described only down to the Family level, and of course, biology has moved on a lot since 1982. A modern equivalent is the <a href="http://tolweb.org/tree/">Tree of Life web project</a>.</p>

<p>The two volumes make a weighty addition to any biologist’s bookshelves.</p>

<p>The cover has the title foil stamped in <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/foundry/162/vgc" data-entity-code-id="162" data-entity-code-type="Foundry">VGC</a>’s <strong><a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/96154/american-uncial-bold" data-entity-code-id="96154" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">American Uncial Bold</a></strong>, and leads into a foil stamped rectangle around a depiction of a DNA molecule undergoing replication and a simplified tree of life. The volume number is from the original <strong><a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/890/american-uncial" data-entity-code-id="890" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">American Uncial</a></strong>.</p>

for various <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bartsol/albums/72157711873400486">clip books of line art</a> issued <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bartsol/albums/72157712223285953">in 1975</a> by Harry Volk Jr. Art Studio, Pleasantville, New Jersey. See the previous post about the clip books issued in 1955 for <a href="http://fontsinuse.com/uses/29786/entertainment-clip-book-of-line-art">more information on Harry Volk Jr. Art Studio</a>.</p>

<p>In most issues from this volume, “Clip Book of Line Art” is set in a light weight of <strong><a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/1143/itc-avant-garde-gothic" data-entity-code-id="1143" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">ITC Avant Garde Gothic</a></strong>, with alternates for <strong>A</strong> and <strong>e</strong>.</p>

<p>While Volk predominantly used phototype styles from Filmotype’s library<a href="http://fontsinuse.com/search/advanced?artwork-date0=before-1965&amp;designers0=12201&amp;match0=all&amp;filters=&amp;order=artwork-date"> in the late 1950s and early 1960s</a>, they had switched to Photo-Lettering (and later ITC) <a href="http://fontsinuse.com/search/advanced?artwork-date0=after-1967&amp;artwork-date1=before-1971&amp;designers0=12201&amp;match0=all&amp;filters=">by the end of the 1960s</a>. The covers in this post also feature a number of faces that originated elsewhere. <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/31468/burko" data-entity-code-id="31468" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Burko</a> was issued by Headliners (and copied by Facsimile Fonts as part of the <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/3801/blippo" data-entity-code-id="3801" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Blippo</a> series). <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/16922/checkmate" data-entity-code-id="16922" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Checkmate</a> started out at Schaedler (and was adopted by Photo-Lettering). <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/32826/yagi-double" data-entity-code-id="32826" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Yagi Double</a> is a Facsimile Fonts creation. Their Bob Trogman claims credit for <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/83456/uncle-bill" data-entity-code-id="83456" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Uncle Bill</a>. <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/31312/zipper" data-entity-code-id="31312" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Zipper</a> and <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/9204/premier-shaded" data-entity-code-id="9204" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Premier Shaded</a> are Letraset originals. <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/115588/archie" data-entity-code-id="115588" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Archie</a> and <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/126246/rock-opera" data-entity-code-id="126246" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Rock Opera</a> may have been created at Lettergraphics (the latter is a derivative of Letraset’s <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/1762/frankfurter" data-entity-code-id="1762" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Frankfurter</a>).</p>

<p>Or did Volk maybe tap into Formatt’s library of faces for dry-transfer lettering? Their catalog no.<span class="nbsp">&nbsp;</span>5 from 1974 shows several of the styles used on these covers, including Rock Opera, Tip Top, Eurostile, Uncle Bill (as Brother Bill), Checkmate (as Tournament), Copperplate (as Broker Shaded), Archie (as Chuckle), Yagi Double (as Circuit Double), and Titan.</p>
