Patsy Ruth Welding was a secretary for the Clark County School District, Nevada, who also practiced as a psychic medium. She died in 2008 at the age of 83. In this book published by Dial Press in 1976, Welding shares some insights into extrasensory perception (ESP). You can find reviews on Kirkus and Good Reads.

The plywood-style typeface is Downsie. It was drawn by Ed Benguiat (1927–2020) for Photo-Lettering. Here it’s used in its “A” style, with the triple outlined shade filled in three shades of blue – apparently as a visual metaphor for the deeper levels of consciousness. The accompanying wide grot is unidentified (Edel-Grotesk / Aurora-Grotesk VI–VII and Trade Gothic Extended are only similar). [edit: it’s Photo-Lettering’s Paramount Gothic, see comments.]

Wandor’s Ride, Avon, 1973. [More info on ISFDB]

The first two volumes of Roland Green’s Wandor series use Benguiat Downsie as the title typeface. The wide sans with horizontal contrast was drawn by Ed Benguiat and is shown in PLINC’s One Line Manual of Styles (1971) in four shaded variants. This is Downsie C, i.e. open letterforms with solid shade. The same style was used for the album art of Kool & The Gang’s Wild and Peaceful, also from 1973, and also with the words set on a curve. Benguiat Downsie didn’t see a whole lot of use, and hasn’t made it to digital so far.

The text on the front and back cover uses another design by Benguiat, ITC Souvenir. The art for both covers is credited to Enric. When the series of fantasy novels was continued with Wandor’s Voyage in 1979, a new cover template featuring ITC Pioneer was introduced, and the first volumes reissued in that design.

Thoughts of Movin’ On is the fifth album by the rock band that formed in 1968 in Toronto. It was released less than six months after One Fine Morning, originally on GRT Records in Canada. The images show the US gatefold release on Evolution (#3010).

The cover design was again provided by Brad Johannsen. Like with the precursor, the typography features two novelty faces that had been added to the library of Photo-Lettering, Inc. shortly before. The band name again is shown in two-colored caps with shadow effect. This time, the chosen typeface is Benguiat Downsie, a wide sans with horizontal contrast, in the vein of Letraset’s Zipper or VGC’s Sintex (both 1970).

The album title is set in Michas, the only typeface design credited to William G. Michas, Jr. Made from basic geometric shapes with thin slots as counters, it recalls Baby Teeth (1967) or Disco (before 1971). An open variant was first shown in PLINC’s Art Deco catalog from 1970.

Wild And Peaceful (1973) was the fourth album by the American funk band Kool & the Gang, and their commercial breakthrough album. The record contains a few hits including “Jungle Boogie”, which became very popular in nightclubs; it was also used as a musical background in the opening titles of Pulp Fiction some twenty years after its release.

The band name and the album title are set on a curve with Benguiat Downsie (Photo-Lettering, Inc., ca. 1971). A reversed contrast display type, with a design similar to Gothic Bold (1899) and Zipper (1970) but made in four differently shaded versions. For this album, Richard Askew used variant “C”, with a solid shade, and combined it with art by Joseph Askew. The back cover uses Univers, and the text on the stickers is set with Frankfurter.
