The White Album by Joan Didion (first edition)
The White Album is a famous set of essays by Joan Didion about the various aspects of living in California in the 1960s and 1970s. She covers weird neighbors, the California governor’s mansion, how to pack, migraines, depression/anxiety, and a wide range of other topics. It is a window on a particular time in a particular place.
In Robert Anthony’s jacket design, Pistilli Roman’s J was elongated so that its ball terminal can do double duty as the dot on the i in the line below. It looks like all letterforms have been made a tad taller. This is especially noticeable in T.
The book’s interior was designed by Guy Fleming and typeset in Palatino, with small caps and italics. Printed by the Murry Printing Company and bound by the Book Press. Published in 1979 by Simon & Schuster, a division of Gulf & Western Corporation .
Palatino is also used for the spine.
The same jacket design was also used for the UK edition by Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London.
The original jacket design was referenced for the FSG Classics edition from 2009.
