Is there a quality difference between ITC Bauhaus from ParaType, ITC or Elsner+Flake?
Good question, Curd. There are definitely differences between the digitizations, particularly in regard to character set, accented characters, and spacing.
Elsner+Flake’s has thin and flat accents as well as smaller umlaut dots (I’m looking at the Medium weights). ParaType’s is the only version to cover Cyrillics. Both ParaType’s and ITC’s Pro offer Central European language support, like Czech or Lithuanian accents. The quality of the diacritics isn’t great in either version, though. Same goes for the spacing – the versions are different, but it’s not like one of them is clearly superior. There’s also URW’s Bauhaus 93 and Bitstream’s Bauhaus BT (aka Geometric 752), but I think the latter is no longer on the market.
It’s a shame that none of the many versions includes the original alternates. On the other hand, I doubt that the world is anxious for a decent revival of ITC Bauhaus.
