Ottavo is a new line of reading glasses created by designer eyewear company Eponym in collaboration with Mucca Design:

The brand’s modernist ideals are expressed through a minimal color palette, plenty of negative space and clean sans serif typography, lightened by an irreverent tone of voice.

From the packaging to the website, Halyard Display was chosen for all typographic aspects of the Ottavo identity. Halyard’s personality is at once familiar and pleasingly distinctive. Mucca perfectly understood how to employ this quality for the desired modernist look. From Halyard Display’s 8-weight range they selected the most suitable weight. Then they fine-tuned the brand’s appearance by choosing from the large variety of alternates included in Halyard. We are thrilled to see our latest release put to such considerate use.

Visit the Halyard microsite to see 14 fictional examples showcasing the unusually-broad functional range of this superfamily.

Take a close look at “Readers”: This ‘R’ is Halyard’s default form. The fonts include three alternate glyphs for this character, incl. a straight-legged one and two forms where the leg curves outwards. The ‘a’ comes in three varieties: In addition to the default and a single-storey form, there is a tailed ‘a’ which is featured here.

Mucca “designed the packaging with […] the credo that form follows function: a belly band allows a single box to be used for many combinations of lens powers, shapes, and colors; and the tag on the glasses sleeve doubles as a pull to upon the box.”
