Tootsie Rolls have been a staple of American candy since the early 1900s. Their brown, red, and white branding has been one of the most iconic and consistent uses of Cooper Black, going back at least as far as the 1970s – seemingly part of the surge in the typeface’s popularity after the Beach Boys released Pet Sounds in 1966 – with the basic design changing very little over the decades.
And Cooper Black’s style seems to ideally match the taste and texture of Tootsie Rolls. As Ellen Lupton once said: “It’s a chewy, dark font that perfectly reflects the Tootsie Roll candy”.
