Hungarian poster (1972) for the 1969 western film Mackenna’s Gold, directed by J. Lee Thompson, featuring Gregory Peck, Omar Sharif, Telly Savalas, Ted Cassidy, Camilla Sparv and Julie Newmar in lead roles, with music by Quincy Jones. DIN A1, offset printed.
The title uses the rarely seen bold weight of Michel Waxman’s Michel. This multiline typeface was distributed by the French company Hollenstein phototypo, and shown in three styles in their 1974 catalog, see the sample below. The maigre style was adopted by Letraset and became the most popular one. The demi-gras weight is shown in Lettera 4 (1972) as Michel gras, with a 1969 date. This book compiled by Armin Haab and Walter Haettenschweiler may have been the source for the letterforms on the poster. The Michel series is completed by a simplified 2-line style.
