Belgian Dutch-language public broadcaster Vlaamse Radio en Televisie / Flemish Radio and Television (VRT) has launched a new brand: VRT NWS. The launch marks a decisive stage in an extensive campaign that started in early 2017 with the introduction of VRT NU (VRT NOW), the first arm of VRT to introduce its new corporate typeface: Forma DJR.

Matti Jokipii, lead identity designer for Today, the agency of record, explains that he and his team found a lot of valuable information about Forma and its history in Forma is back, Type Network’s online brochure. As the designers started to experiment with the family, Today contacted David Jonathan Ross, who revealed that he had already been toying with the idea of adding more weights to the typeface. His plans included a Black weight, which was exactly what the VRT NWS identity needed. This campaign marks the first use of the new weight; read Yves Peters’s story over on Type Network.
