The cover for Stephen Robinett’s novel The Man Responsible combines an illustration by Vincent Di Fate with Alpha Midnight, set on an angle. Thanks to the research of Shin Oka (Daylight Fonts, h/t Cave Grove) who shares our passion for peculiar typefaces, we now know the name of the man responsible for this stencil beauty: It is Hiroshi Yamashita. The Alpha series was issued in c. 1970 by John N. Schaedler, Inc. Now who is responsible for stretching the letterforms in this use?
