Moodymann – Silence in the Secret Garden album art
Silence in the Secret Garden is an album by Detroit-based house producer Kenny Dixon Jr a.k.a. Moodymann, released with Peacefrog Records in 2003. The script used on the cover and the labels of the double LP is Richard Lipton’s Avalon, a typeface in three weights inspired by the calligraphy of Austrian lettering artist Friedrich Neugebauer (1911–2005). Avalon was originally released with Font Bureau in 1995 and is now available from Lipton Letter Design via Type Network.
Avalon’s d—stemless, with top loop—hints at its roots in the German-language writing tradition. This form is a characteristic of Kurrentschrift, but can also be spotted in “Latin” German script typefaces from the mid 20th century, like Paul Zimmermann’s Impuls (1954), Heinrich Pauser’s Petra (1954), G.G. Lange’s Boulevard (1955), Georg Trump’s Time Script (1956), or Helmut Matheis’ Verona (1958) and Compliment (1965). Older examples with this form include Walter Höhnisch’s Skizze (1935), Erich Mollowitz’s Forelle (1936), and Carlos Winkow’s Gong (1945).
