Valdez Is Coming is a 1971 American western film starring Burt Lancaster and Susan Clark, based on Elmore Leonard’s novel from 1969.
The posters as well as the trailer show the movie title and Burt Lancaster’s name in coarse caps with uneven contours. The letterforms are probably custom drawn, but obviously modeled after Rudolf Koch’s Neuland typeface (1923). The Z in Valdez is embellished with a star that references a spur rowel or a bang, or both.
The typography of the tagline (“They tore his body. They buried his pride …”) is in a slab serif, a style that is closely associated with the Western genre. The typeface used here is a version of Stymie Bold Condensed (feat. an ‘A’ without top bar). The mix is completed by News Gothic for credits.
