Ten years ago, most of my design peers would have agreed that this jacket design looks terribly dated — too dark, too loud, too stiff. That outlined Helvetica white on black is a nightmare. That three lines of Stack are at least two too much. Today I can well imagine spotting a newly released book about cultural studies or urbanism with exactly this kind of brutalist cover typography. Of course the fonts now wouldn’t be Helvetica and Stack, but rather, say, Px Grotesk and Grow.
