Pyramid’s paperback edition (1976) of The Starcrossed (1975) by Ben Bova (*1932), with cover art by Vincent Di Fate (*1945). The typeface is Circo, a narrow bottom-heavy Italienne by Czech designer Jan Solpera (*1939). It was released by Berthold Fototypes in 1971 and copied by Lettergraphics as Cirque. Flying Circus (Harold’s Fonts, 2017) is a digital revival.
This book and its author, Ben Bova, are connected with colleague sci-fi author Harlan Ellison, whose paperback series for Pyramid Books was posted earlier this week (see this post).
Ben Bova’s 1975 novel The Starcrossed, a roman à clef about Bova and Ellison’s experience on The Starlost TV series, features a character “Ron Gabriel” who is a pastiche of Ellison. Bova’s novel is dedicated to Ellison’s pseudonym “Cordwainer Bird”.
