Dr. John – “Such A Night” German single cover
German sleeve for Dr. John’s single release “Such A Night” with B side “Cold Cold Cold” from his 1973 album In the Right Place.
The artist’s name is in Sunshine, the open member of a pair of ultrageometric counterless shaded faces designed by Mike Daines and issued as a Letraset original in 1971. Moonshine is the solid counterpart. The song titles are in all-caps Egyptienne Bold Condensed, which was also available from Letraset at that time. In 2000, Ray Larabie made a digital interpretation of Sunshine/Moonshine named Misirlou/Misirlou Day.
Mike Daines is probably better known as the designer of Hawthorn (1968), Letraset’s adaptation of De Vinne. More recently, he authored Faces from Letraset, “a complete, illustrated catalogue of the display typefaces designed at Letraset during 50 years”. The booklet is available from eLexicons and also through the International Society of Typographic Designers at istd.org. It has proven a valuable source of information to me. Thanks, Mike!
