Poster designed by Karel Vaca for the Czechoslovak release of The Prisoner of Second Avenue (“Zajatec II. Avenue”), Frank Melvin’s 1975 film adaptation of a black comedy play by Neil Simon, starring Jack Lemmon, Anne Bancroft, and Gene Saks.

The sans serif caps filled with stars in the upper and vertical stripes in the lower half are from a typeface that is shown as Moore Liberty in Solotype’s 1992 catalog. It might be designed by David Moore who is also credited for Moore Computer and Moore Swash. [Edit: getsuren confirmed that it was carried by VGC and hence indeed was likely designed by Moore.]

  1. I wonder whether the designers of the poster for The Silence Of The Lambs (1991) were familiar with Vaca’s poster. It’s not just the big central face and the lepidopterans, Jack Lemmon here also resembles Hannibal Lecter, no?
