Contação de Histórias. Tradição, Poéticas e Interfaces
Brazilian design studio Bloco Gráfico used elements from the Woodkit typeface to illustrate Contação de Histórias. Tradição, Poéticas e Interfaces (Storytelling: tradition, poetics and interfaces). This solid publication (544 pages, 1100 gr) seeks to collect and reflect on the tradition of oral storytelling.
The titles and author names use the condensed alternates included in Woodkit Letterpress, which can be activated via the OpenType feature Discretionary Ligatures. The bigger shapes on the cover and the chapter opening pages are from Woodkit Block. Texts are set in Alegreya and Alegreya Sans.
The book explores the practices of narrators through ethnic, regional and popular perspectives, as well as establishing relationships with other artistic languages and diverse areas of knowledge.
Storytelling is an age-old practice through which man can understand his relationship to the other and to the universe in which he lives. For PhD researcher in the performing arts Fábio Henrique Nunes Medeiros and for PhD in literature theory Taíza Mara Rauen Moraes – organizers of the book Storytelling: tradition, poetics and interfaces – “it is very difficult to curtail the act of telling stories, and this is not due solely to its temporal and spatial vastness, but to the intrinsic characteristic of all ephemeral arts, as is the case of theater and dance. In our view, this is due to the germ of the soul of these artistic expressions being based on the relation with the other, in a kind of mirror effect. As Walter Benjamin says, in the faculty of exchanging experiences, ‘experience that passes from person to person is the source to which all narrators have resorted.’”
The book has the introduction of the organizers and texts of 89 authors, divided into three main thematic axes: “Tradition”, “Poetics” and “Interfaces”, as well as a section of entries common to the universe of the art of counting.
