Free Soul is a Japanese compilation series, published through different music companies. Compiled by Toru Hashimoto, this influential series introduced (mainly 1970s) soul, funk and jazz to young Japanese music fans in the 1990s. The album art was designed by Eisaku Ono, who also served as the art director Relax magazine in the 2000s.
Throughout the series, the cover would feature a cropped photograph of a woman’s face, a big “free soul” logo, set in Stilla (François Boltana for Letraset, 1972) and a title set in Kuenstler Scrit Black or Eurostile.
