The 1974 USA original Random House / Alfred A. Knopf hardcover pressing of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy by John Le Carré, featuring a very Russian-looking Vodka by Charles Papirtis. This one really stumped us at Typophile, a few years ago. Found the answer while looking through PLINC's Alphabet Thesaurus Volume 2.

Designed by the great R.D. Scudellari.

  1. The back of Alphabet Thesaurus II shows these alternates.

  2. Photo-Lettering, Inc. advert from December, 1962.

  3. Thanks, Patrick! I’ve adjusted the date on our typeface page. Is this from your personal collection? Got more of these?

  4. A mere clipping from Art Direction (1953–1975). Microfilm copies available online at the Internet Archive.

You could add the V from ADVANCE to the VODKA sample too, if you’d like.

  5. Also sometimes known as Art Direction: The Magazine of Visual Communication. Issues continued into the late ’70s, ’80s, ’90s. Not sure beyond that.

  6. Thanks, Patrick! That’s a great digitized resource I wasn’t aware of. I’ve updated the sample.
