GridBots is an educational modular toy created for kids to explore how they can interact with robotics.

I approached this project wanting to simplify how complex chain reactions can be introduced to kids and in the process build a system that would spark creativity using electronics.

Throughout the set, color is used to guide the order that the pieces are assembled. In my eyes, OH no’s beautifully quirky Covik Sans perfectly embodied the geometric joy that I wanted this project to convey. The typeface’s flexibility allowed it to be used for large headers and as the body text throughout the instruction booklet. To add to this quirky family of type, Jake Fleming’s Goiters was a great fit for the GridBots logotype, with its bloated forms and heavy groove.

Each robot is brought to life by an electronic hub that holds a small servo motor, an Arduino, and a LiPo battery. The Arduino is programmed to respond to changes in light or motion from the sensors in each circuit.
