Marco Polo is an American drama series inspired by the young Marco Polo, who is noted as one of the first Europeans to assimilate into Chinese culture. Marco Polo focuses on his early years in the court of Kublai Khan, the emperor of the Mongol Empire and the founder of the Yuan dynasty. The show premiered on Netflix on December 12, 2014. — blackgirlnerds.com

It’s nice to see Netflix and advertising agencies are embracing alternatives to Neutraface. Like Neutraface, Citarella Gothic pairs a very low x-height which makes for an elegant effect. Its bold, wide capitals really work well in display type, as shown in the logo and wordmark for the “Marco Polo” series (2014–16). Not to mention, the designer notes that the design of Citarella was derived from his Italian ancestry, so promoting Marco Polo with Citarella Gothic (with a modified M) was a nice nod to that heritage.

Apart from the Marco Polo logo, all text on the posters is set in the brand typeface, Netflix Sans. [edit: It’s Gotham, see comments.]

  1. Right you are, Otto! Thanks for the correction. Netflix Sans wasn’t announced before March 2018.
