The German edition of the Autobiography of Mark Twain. The Complete and Authoritative Edition, Volume 1 was recently published by Aufbau. It comprises two volumes in a slipcase, with the second tome holding background information and appendices. Hans-Christian Oeser and Andreas Mahler provided the translation.*

As one would expect for the story of “the father of American literature” (W. Faulkner), the two typefaces used for the exterior both come from American foundries – Acropolis by Hoefler & Frere-Jones, and Agenda by Font Bureau. The interior is set in Adobe Garamond. Interestingly, the cover of the original edition (University of California Press, 2010) in turn uses a typeface with German roots, Akzidenz-Grotesk.

  1. Acropolis and Knox are wonderful Display fonts. That’s why I’m always amazed that the more extensive, similar variants of the Kairos families hardly get any attention.
