Unlike some later typesetting devices, the Filmotype machine wasn’t capable of distorting letterforms, like slanting or stretching them. That’s why they had to draw all the variations individually. They gave each style a distinct name, but would use the same initial letter for a certain genre. The letter R stood for “Serif”, as you can see in a specimen from around 1958.
The styles don’t really form a cohesive family, and you can find small differences in the treatment of certain details. But yes, they are related to some extent. Rodgers may be described as a bolder and less condensed variant of Ranger. While Ranger’s a has a round “belly”, the bowl–stem transition of this letter is different in Rodgers.
