Roland Schenk’s Gros Titre for the cover of Citadel’s 1965 paperback edition of André Gide’s White Notebook. I wonder if the design might be by Milton Glaserhe used the same typeface for Opera News around the same time, and employed a similar illustration style in the early 1960s, see e.g. the cover for Boswell’s Life of Samuel Johnson.

[Edit: it’s not by Glaser, see the comments.]

  1. The design credit goes to Henrietta Condak – three cheers for the folks of the Internet Archive who have digitized a copy of this book – including the back cover with the crucial information.
