U.S. Collier Books paperback edition (1962, 12th printing) of Charles Darwin’s The Origin of Species, with a cover by Kenneth R. Deardoff. The title and author are set in Bookman (Italic) while the description is set in News Gothic on both the front and back cover.

Unfortunately, this cover doesn’t utilize the Ch ligature in the author name, and the C swash varies with the emphasis at the top instead of the bottom (somewhat similar to the glyph in Bookman Meola). I can’t quite place the C but it seems as though it is still within the Bookman fam.

  1. Thanks, Annie! This comes close to Photo-Bookman with Swashes or Bookman Italic Swash Series as shown in Photo-Lettering’s One Line catalog. At least these have this top-heavy swash C. Slightly squooshed and with lowered i dots, it could be a match.
