A book I put together as a teacher for my first year students at University of Arts and Design, Karlsruhe, Germany. It came as a reader with the course Know Your Tools. As a first-year course it gave insights in how to use and work with desktop image editing, vector drawing and layouting. The book shows graphic design essentials such as commonly used tools or color management and highlights the differences between various file formats. Massimiliano Audretsch designed the book in a way so that it fits in a pocket, can be carried around, and used when urgently needed. The book does not intend to show every single aspect of the mentioned design applications. The main idea was to get the students to know the right keywords so that they later, when confronted with more complex issues in any of the taught applications, can quickly find answers via online search – as admittedly most designers do.
