Eurostile caps with a dimensional/symmetrical shadow effect, similar to the one in Milton Glaser’s Baby Fat. I don’t know if there was a prefabricated phototype version with this effect, or if it was added just for this use. The shadow is shown in color; red, green, and rose; making the letters stand out against the black background. The counters of the two A’s are marked with the silhouettes of the United States and of the African continent.

Black Faith and Black Solidarity. Pan-Africanism and Faith in Christ was published by Friendship Press, New York, in 1973. The cover was designed by Heff Heisler.

  1. That showing of this style used in this cover was on the book Modern Display Alphabets from c. 1974, which I scanned back in August of 2022. I wondered if Lettergraphics carried that face like this in full glory:

    Any thoughts?

  2. For me, I think it was called Eurostyle.

  3. I looked it up and you’re correct: this outlined and shaded variant was carried by (and probably originated at) Lettergraphics. It’s shown in their 1976 catalog as Eurostyle Bold Double Shaded. Two years later, Castcraft showed it as Eurostile Bold Shaded Double. Like Photo-Lettering, Lettergraphics spelled Nebiolo’s design with a y instead of an i (for all styles).
