Mammals of the Southwest Deserts
Cover of the third edition, 1965. The same design was used already for the second edition from 1959, and still for the fourth from 1970.
A 1965 edition of a booklet on identifying the mammals of the Southwest Deserts, edited by George Olin and published by the Southwest Parks and Monuments Association. The first edition appeared in 1954 under a different title, Animals of the Southwest Desert, with a different cover design.
The neutral and quintessentially American Franklin Gothic is complemented by an eccentric Deco sans: Bernhard Gothic, which combines humanist and geometric elements. Both typefaces take a secondary role to the gorgeous illustration, made by Jerry Cannon, who also illustrated the black and white images inside of the booklet. The credits are set is Vogue, which has similar qualities as Bernhard Gothic.
The text typeface is a Baskerville. The animal names appear to be in the bold style of Century Schoolbook or similar, while the Latin names show a bold italic Bodoni.
1975 edition with updated cover. Cannon’s illustration had to make way for a photo. The typographic choices are still the same.
