Cover from Kostas Tournas’ 1976 album Sto Sinema. Most likely, the plain Latin version of Premier Shaded is used here. The artist name and title are convenient enough so that the Greek characters transliterated to Latin don’t look like a shortcoming of the font face, but as deliberate stylization.

Specifically, capital sigma (Σ) is transliterated as S, while capital omega (Ω) as W. Essentially, the transliterated letters are presented respectively as small-caps print of the final sigma (ς) and the minuscule omega (ω).

  1. Hello Manolis,

Thanks for this contribution, very interesting! Letraset had a few Greek faces, but as far as I know, their Premier Shaded had Latin characters only, so you are probably right.

There are two things going on at the same time. The title STO SINEMA is the standard Latin transliteration of the Greek ΣΤΟ ΣΙΝΕΜΆ. The artist’s name, however, is not transliterated as KOSTAS TOURNAS as one might expect. Instead, the designers repurposed Latin characters that look similar to the Greek letters in question, irrespective of their phonetic value. It’s KWSTAS TOYPNAS – a visual emulation of ΚΏΣΤΑΣ ΤΟΥΡΝΆΣ (Κώστας Τουρνάς).

  2. I love the usage of w to replace the omega (ω) in this one. The spontaneous use of Greeklish for the majority of greek script users showcases the same use of w instead of simply an O in the case of omega.
