A series of posters designed by Jason Cryer encouraging progressives to vote for Joe Biden in the 2020 United States presidential election.
Images feature key political leaders: Angela Davis, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cornel West, Bernie Sanders, Ilhan Omar, and Elizabeth Warren. Text running along the edge provide source citations, along with three statements:
Idealism → Realism
Vote ≠ Endorsement
Stakes = High
Accompanying text includes an excerpt from an interview with Angela Davis:
I’m not going to actually support either of the major candidates. But I do think we have to participate in the election … the election will not so much be about who gets to lead the country to a better future, but rather how we can support ourselves and our own ability to continue to organize and place pressure on those in power. And I don’t think there’s a question about which candidate would allow that process to unfold.

Looks dashing, but I doubt this does the campaign any service. It looks retro, hinting at the age of Biden and the Cyrillic-looking font used for his name (specifically the letter ‘n’) substantiates the fake-news claims about him being tied to Russia.
This is a very good example for the fact that good design has to be far more than just good looks in order to deliver the message right.
I agree with your concluding statement, but not with the two points you make. To me, this looks more hip than retro. Or maybe a flavor of retro that is hip, not reactionary. More importantly, this is aimed at a clientele that’s not prone to claims about Biden being tied to Russia. With the featured personnel and statements like “Idealism → Realism” and “Vote ≠ Endorsement”, it specifically addresses voters who would have preferred a more progressive candidate than Biden.
