Some people think that the Lunfardo originated in the prisons at the XIX century so that the police would not understand it and from there it goes to the port areas, the tenement houses (“conventilos”) and the brothels.
Lunfardo is a form of Buenos Aires slang. It takes words or expressions from many languages like Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, African languages, and other. It is a colloquial speech, popular in music, theatre, and literature. Some examples:
morfar = to eat; guita = money; mina = woman; laburar = to work; pibe = children; malandra = criminal; chorro = thieves.
This man in the photo from a hundred years ago represents the stereotype of the underworld, the street and rebellious spirit. There are those who also say that Astor Piazzolla did the same exercise of subversion and disruption with the traditional tango, as Lunfardo did with the Spanish language.

El Lunfardo, según se piensa, se originó en las cárceles a finales del siglo anterior para que no lo entiendan los policías y de ahí pasa a las zonas portuarias, los conventillos y los prostíbulos.
El Lunfardo es una forma de lenguaje callejero de Buenos Aires. Toma palabras o expresiones de diferentes idiomas como italiano, portugués, español, francés, alemán o lenguas africanas, entre otras. Es un lenguaje coloquial pero está muy presente en la literatura, la música y el teatro. Algunos ejemplos de lunfardo son: morfar = comer; guita = dinero; mina = mujer; laburar = trabaja; pibe = niño; malandra = criminal.
Este señor tan tatuado era, hace cien años, un poco el estereotipo del hampa y viene a representar ese espíritu callejero y contestatario. Hay quien dice también que Piazzolla hizo con el tango tradicional un poco el mismo ejercicio de subversión y disrupción que el lunfardo con el castellano.
