Confiserie Glaces
Sign for a candy shop / ice cream parlor, spotted somewhere in France, 2006, but probably made much earlier (1960s?). The lowercase letterforms appear to be patterned after Roger Excoffon’s Chambord étroit. This condensed style was first cast in 1949, as part of the Chambord series, crated at Fonderie Olive in Marseille to compete with Cassandre’s Peignot (1937). You can learn more about this first published typeface design by Excoffon in Bruce Kennett’s lecture held at the Cooper Union from 2019. Being a three-dimensional sign, this is obviously not a direct use of the metal type, but rather a case of lettering derived from typeface. Differences notably include c, e, s with heavier terminals.
