On This Day She is a new book written by Jo Bell, Tania Hershman, and Ailsa Holland. The page-a-day history book features 366 women “who have earned a place in history, but haven’t always got it.”
Consequently, the book design by Emily Rough and Envy Design exclusively features fonts designed by women. Triplex Condensed Sans was chosen as the display typeface. It’s used for headings including names and dates, the chapter openings for each months, as well as for quotes and page numbers. On the dust jacket, the title is shown in all caps, set with one word per line. The elongated style with the curved, Art Nouveau-like diagonals is here paired with regular-wide Triplex Sans for the subtitle. Triplex was designed by Zuzana Licko in 1989, and made available through Emigre, a magazine/font label co-founded by Licko.
The text typeface used for typesetting all body copy is Edita. This contemporary book typeface was started by Pilar Cano in 2006 as her graduation project from the MA program in Typeface Design at the University of Reading. Cano released Edita with TypeTogether in 2009. She currently is the co-founder and director of Letterjuice, and a visiting lecturer at EINA.
On This Day She was published by John Blake Publishing Ltd, an imprint of Bonnier Books UK, in February 2021. It’s accompanied by a Twitter account, @OnThisDayShe, which posts daily teasers.
