When Tro Songways Service brought out a book of sheet music for “Space Oddity” and other songs by David Bowie, designer Bill Venter apparently wanted to use a typeface like the one featured on the U.S. album release of the same name. The MICR-style typeface used on the album cover is Magnetic Ink. With its added lowercase and three bolder weights, this adaptation of Moore Computer was exclusively available from Photo-Lettering.
It seems that Venter’s type provider only carried a similar face: Calculator is a lesser known addition to this genre. Its designer is unknown. Calculator was issued by Headliners in or before 1969, and was later also known as neo-Calculator. At Castcraft, it went by the alias LaGrange Agency.
