This is the East German poster for Grand Prix (USA, 1966), John Frankenheimer’s Formula One drama starring James Garner, Eva Marie Saint, Yves Montand, Toshiro Mifune, Brian Bedford, Françoise Hardy, Jessica Walter, and Antonio Sabato.
The original U.S. poster features Futura Black with customized forms for G, r, and x. The unknown German designer adopted this wordmark, but implemented it in a more spectacular way: the lettering here is shown much bigger, with perspective distortion, as if it was applied to the racing car. With the Grim Reaper in the back seat, it almost starts to look like a graphic campaign against speeding.
