Bacurau (2019) is a Brazilian and French co-production film directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles. The film is an interesting blend of film genres: a weird Western revenge film with a firm foundation based on classic Brazilian and Western films.
As such, the US branding for the film draws from posters from another time. Illustrated by Tony Stella and designed by Midnight Marauder, the poster’s headline is in ITC Grouch, and features text in Cooper BT Medium.
The chunky fonts contribute to the poster’s pulpy aesthetic, and the simplicity of the type is starkly contrasted by an almost psychedelic color palette in the illustration.
Mubi’s Adrian Curry wrote an article reflecting on the movie posters (and movies) that influenced this one, which were featured in Mapping Bacurau, a film series directed by Bacurau’s directors.
