This series of paperback editions of books by J.G. Ballard (1930–2009) was published by Triad Granada in the United Kingdom in 1984–1985, with cover art by James Marsh. The typographer is unknown.
Not quite sure if this really is a version/modification of Futura Extra Bold. Not Tempo Black either. The J is more like in Filmotype Flyer. The G and the M throw me off. [edit: Bryson suggests a modified Twentieth Century Ultrabold, see comments.]

Clearly, this could be a phototype version of Futura’s Extra Bold style.
It’s clear that someone took Twentieth Century Ultrabold and modified the G.
As mentioned in the post above, this might be Twentieth Century Ultrabold with a modified G: unlike Intertype’s Futura Extra Bold (i.e., the “real deal”), it has that J with the vertically cut tail and more open C. Sorry for the double post, but I hope this might be useful to somebody.
Thanks, Bryson. I didn’t see your previous comment. Yes, that sounds likely. I’ve tagged Twentieth Century now. In addition to G, the M must have been modified, too. Chances are that such a modified version was available from some English phototype company, or it’s an ad-hoc customization.
