The 44th Annual Academy Awards took place on April 10, 1972 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles and were broadcast by NBC. The French Connection won five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director (William Friedkin), and Best Actor (Gene Hackman). Jane Fonda won Best Actress (in Klute), and Charlie Chaplin received an Honorary Academy Award.
