Trans(m)issions, Shared Experiences exhibition at MO.CO.

Trans(m)issions, Shared Experiences is an exhibition for the MO.CO. (Montpellier Contemporain), a structure that includes two exhibition centres and an art school. The question of pedagogy as practice, process, and artistic experience is addressed through three prominent figures for whom transmission in itself is art: Jean-Luc Vilmouth, Mathilde Monnier, and the collective Gruppo Petrolio. As an introduction, the exhibition opens with works by recent MO.CO. Esba graduates.

For the signage and the booklets, Orientation is used for the titles and Moulin is used for the body text.

Orientation is a stencil typeface originally commissioned for the wayfinding system of a student housing building in Roubaix, France. Orientation was subsequently expanded to a full family of three weights and matching italics. As the weight range progresses from light to bold, the characters become abstract, even pushing the bounds of legibility, but in the context of words they are surprisingly readable.

Moulin is an asymmetrical flared design influenced by classical lettering and Adrian Frutiger’s underappreciated Icone from 1980. The balance of black and white and tension between inner and outer forms give a sculptural rather than calligraphic character, resulting in a comfortable texture for text.
