The Story of Letraset’s Quicksilver typeface by its designer Dean Morris is worth reading.

  2. Absolutely. I’ve linked to it from our typeface page.

Where was the album cover for Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five’s The Message shot?

  4. Re: Damian’s question of where was the photograph taken. A internet rabbit hole led to an adventure on Google Maps… 😳 Here it is, opposite 28th Precinct Police Station, corner of 8th Avenue, 123rd Street, NYC.

  5. That’s amazing! Thanks for sharing, Mark.

Via your image, I found this 2021 interview by JayQuan with EZ Mike, who was an assistant to Grandmaster Flash, and the guy in the far left of the picture. That post has a similar image. It’s not mentioned, but the image is taken from a 2015 article on Mass Appeal titled “Iconic Hip Hop Albums in Google Maps Street View (Part 2)”. The page is gone and the archived copy doesn’t include the image, but you can see it in a repost by Whudat.

  6. Thank you for your kind words Florian!

I did see that article briefly – and it mathematically adds up with E-Z Mike’s claim. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five – when 6 are pictured! I’ll try and remember who they are, Melle Mel (far right), Kid Creole on lamppost (Melle Melt’s brother btw), Cowboy, Raheem, Scorpio…

I do have an autographed copy of this album, I dj’d for them at a Sugarhill Gang / Melle Mel 20th anniversary show. Took the opportunity to get a lot of records signed! Met Flash by accident in NY about a year later, he was shooting a video for a record with Flavour Flav, a guest appearance for a French rapper, who I can’t quite recall!
