Freetree is a browser extension that plants trees when you shop online. Once the extension has been installed and turned on, it will recognize whenever you are shopping at one of their partner online retailers — more than 10,000 including biggies like Amazon, IKEA, H&M, and Ebay — and then for each purchase those shops pay Freetree a small amount for referring you, which they use to plant trees.
The planting is carried out with the expertise of ECOSIA (est. 2009), a search engine that plants trees with its ad revenue — close to 15 million users have helped plant over 100 million trees all over the world. For Freetree, the results are still more modest with 7,940 trees planted so far although that number is about to go up by 60,000 thanks to London, UK- and Lisbon, Portugal-based How&Howwho designed the identity and waived their fee to be paid in trees.
