Joan Didion: What She Means is an upcoming exhibition at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles:

Organized by critically acclaimed writer and New Yorker contributor Hilton Als, the exhibition features approximately 50 artists ranging from Betye Saar to Vija Celmins, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Maren Hassinger, Silke Otto-Knapp, John Koch, Jorge Pardo, Ed Ruscha, Pat Steir, and many others. The more than 200 works include painting, ephemera, photography, sculpture, video, and footage from a number of the films for which Didion authored screenplays.

The accompanying catalog is co-published by DelMonicoBooks. It’s described as “an exploration of the visual corollary to Didion’s life and work and the feeling that each generates in her admirers, detractors and critics”.

For the cover design, ELLA used nothing but Canela, in a single size of center-aligned caps. The title – a reference to Didion’s essay collection Let Me Tell You What I Mean from 2021 – is embossed without ink.
